Google’s mobile operating system, Android has
become the most popular and widely used mobile
OS for the first time ever in Africa, according to
data from StatCounter .
The recent stats reveal that Android usage
increased by about 10 per cent within the last one
year from 17.67% in January 2013 to 27.97% in
January 2014, thereby displacing Nokia’s Series
40 on 27.76%, which has been the continent’s
leading mobile OS for several years now.

Globally, Android dominates over 80% of
smartphone shipments
as there are several smartphone manufacturers
that run Android on their devices and has since
become the most widely used mobile OS in the
world.
Industry analysts believe that the Android surge in
Africa could be as a result of the proliferation of
budget Android devices from manufacturers such
as TECNO , arguably the fastest selling mobile
phone brand in Africa.
Android OS is expected to continue growth in its
usage in Africa over the years.
